Funky, Inspirational grooves that rock your soul
Formed by Singer/Saxophonist/Floutist, Chelsea Luker, in collaboration with Rick Bouvette on bass, Eric Hickey on guitar, and Dan Duval on guitar, plus a rotating cast of Portland’s best Funk Drummers, JoyTribe is a passionate fusion of Pretenders inspired vocals meets Prince and Pink Floyd’s psychedelic funk child.
Chelsea initiated JoyTribe with the goal of making unique fusion in a democratic writing situation. After 5 years with Mars Retrieval Unit, and a little break in Thailand, she took time searching for the right fit of musicians. Once she reacquainted with former MRU bassist Rick B., everything fell into place. Initially imagining a mix of electronic, prog and funk, the music made up it’s own mind to veer towards World Inspired Funk. Songs lean heavily on reggae, Latin and African elements, paired with vintage Rock/Funk vibes. Due to Eric’s study of Latin percussion and Flamenco, Rick’s love of Reggae and R&B, Chelsea’s Classical and Jazz performance background and Dan’s passion for Jazz and Rock, the music can go anywhere during a show.
With one goal to make the listener dance with Joy, original songs come from an uplifting place, and cover choices are some of our favorite dance songs. The mood of the band is intense and sometimes shy, a little silliness bursts through, but there is a very strong sense of passion, focus and love during live performances.
JoyTribe has been performing around the NW since 2013, opening for international touring acts such as Balkan Beat Box, Dumpstaphunk, Afrolicious and Kung FU. In 2019, they released two singles, Creepy Love and Faith in the Funk. They released their first EP in 2017, “We Insist”, featuring 5 original songs and an adapted version of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes”.
Current JoyTribe rotating members may include: Gil Assayas on keys (Glasys, Edna Vasquez, and Todd Rundgren’s Utopia), Mike Apodaca (formerly World’s Finest), Cheo Larcombe on drums (Diego’s Umbrella, March 4th Marching band), Micah Hummel on drums, and Darvey Santner on guitar.
